On the Edge of Happiness is set in London in the aftermath the riots. A short film it tells the story of one man, Tibbs, who doesn’t return home. His story is told through the eyes of a group of his close friends.
The short film will be shot on 16mm and it is a London Film School production. Casting takes place the week beginning October 3rd for one and a half weeks. Filming takes place at the end of October. The director and writer is Corine Dhondee.

Beginning when Tibbs leaves home we are introduced to Maya his girlfriend and his close friends Tony and Sam who join Maya in preparing a surprise party for him. The friends drink a little and dance a little in anticipation of his return. News begins to filter through that men are being stopped, searched and detained. When Tibbs doesn’t return the celebratory mood changes.
The films is based on true-life stories told after the London riots when men were arrested and detained without friends and family knowing their whereabouts. It will be shot as an Italian neo-realism film set in London.
Tibbs: Tibbs is 29 years old and today is his 30th birthday. He shares a small flat with Maya his girlfriend who he has been seeing for 2 years. Tibbs works as a youth worker and sometimes he is called out on weekend work. On his birthday he goes to volunteer at a football tournament and he doesn’t return home.
Maya: Maya is 31 years old. She has started up her own design company and works mostly from home. Today is her boyfriend’s Tibbs’ birthday. In love with Tibbs and knowing that he will spend the day at work she organizes a surprise birthday party for him, inviting a close friend’s of Tibbs to share the surprise. Maya prepares the celebration in anticipation of Tibbs’ return. She dances and creates colourful foods that reflect her mood. But on hearing news of arrests in north London the celebratory mood turns sour.
Tony: Tony is 30 years old and he is Tibbs’ closest friend. Invited to Tibbs’ surprise birthday party Tony is on top form. He works long hours as a youth worker. He relaxes by going to the gym. Today he has decided to blow his worries to the wind. His only concern is to have a good time. On hearing news of arrests in north London the celebratory mood turns sour and Tony decides to leave in search of Tibbs.
Sam: Sam is 30 years old and she is Tony’s girlfriend. She arrives to Tibbs’ party with Tony. She is a chatty, friendly woman who has a winning smile. At the surprise party she helps with the decorations, drinks a little, and dances a little. Her day job is at a leading London charity but tonight she decides to kick back and have fun. But on hearing news of arrests in north London the celebratory mood turns sour.
